Coney Island Cafe: A Historic Hattiesburg Diner Experience

Ready for a taste of history? Coney Island Cafe is the oldest restaurant in Hattiesburg. This cafe has been serving the Downtown Hattiesburg community for 100 years! Since 1923, the Fokakis Family has kept the original spirit alive, serving up hearty breakfasts and lunches that echo the simplicity and warmth of bygone days.

The original owner, Arthur Fokakis, started out by selling fruits from a simple cart parked under a big shade tree near the train tracks on Main Street. As his business grew, he leased the spot under the tree and built a small fruit stand. Eventually, he transformed it into a cozy little quick-service cafe.

You can order a fried egg sandwich at the lunch counter, or an old-fashioned burger or a chili dog and curly home fries in a booth. They also offer a blue plate special for lunch. The staff is friendly, the food is good, and the location is great. When you’re done with breakfast or lunch, walk a block over and visit the Hattiesburg Pocket Museum. See if you can find Bigfoot.
